Ask a room to guess who'll give the best presentation, and most people point at the person with the highest GPA — the one who read every source, double-checked every figure, and never once got a fact wrong in a meeting. Then that person gets up, opens a 41-slide deck, and the room quietly checks their phones by slide six.
This isn't bad luck. It's a fairly predictable outcome of what school actually trained. Grading rewards completeness and accuracy. It has almost nothing to say about whether a stranger, hearing this for the first time, can follow it, feel it, or remember it a day later. Those are different skills, and nobody ever failed a student for not having them.
Grading Trains a Different Skill Than Persuading
A straight-A student's instinct, when asked to explain something, is to be right and to be thorough — in that order. Both habits were reinforced for years by people whose job was to check whether every claim held up, not whether the audience stayed with them. So the reflex under pressure is to include the caveat, cite the source, define the term, and cover the edge case, because leaving any of that out used to cost points.
In a meeting or a pitch, none of that is being graded. The audience isn't checking your work; they're deciding whether to keep listening. A slide that hedges every claim reads as caution to the person who wrote it and as friction to everyone else. I've sat through decks where the presenter clearly knew ten times more than what was on the slide — and the slide still failed, because it tried to prove that instead of using it.
The Curse of Knowing Everything
There's a well-known psychology experiment behind this, and it's worth knowing the actual setup rather than the watered-down version people quote. In 1990, Stanford researcher Elizabeth Newton ran a study where "tappers" tapped out the rhythm of a familiar song on a table, and "listeners" tried to guess the tune. Tappers predicted listeners would get it right about half the time. The actual hit rate was closer to one in forty. The tappers could hear the melody in their heads so clearly that they couldn't imagine anyone missing it from the taps alone.
That gap is now called the curse of knowledge, and it explains a specific failure mode in overachievers' decks. The presenter isn't tapping randomly — they're tapping out a melody they know cold, assuming the rhythm alone will carry it. It won't. Every acronym that feels obvious, every step that gets skipped because "everyone knows this part," every dense chart dropped in without a walk-through — those are all taps, not tunes.
"Being Thorough" Quietly Becomes a Substitute for Having a Point
Here's where it gets counterintuitive: thoroughness looks like rigor, so it rarely gets challenged in the moment. A 38-slide appendix-heavy deck signals effort. Nobody in the room says "this is too complete" — they just disengage and say nothing. The presenter walks away thinking the content did its job, because nobody objected to any individual slide.
But completeness and clarity trade against each other past a certain point, and that point arrives earlier than most careful people expect. Once a slide is carrying three ideas instead of one, the audience isn't evaluating which idea matters most — they're doing that triage themselves, mid-sentence, while you're still talking. You've handed your job to them. The fix isn't "add less text," which is the generic version of this advice. The actual fix is deciding, before the slide exists, which one sentence it needs to prove — and treating everything else as material for the appendix or the Q&A, not the main deck.
The Slide as Proof of Work vs. The Slide as a Tool
Straight-A habits also change what a slide is for. In school, the written work often was the deliverable — the essay, the lab report, the exam answer had to stand alone and demonstrate understanding. Carried into a presentation, that instinct produces slides that could be read silently and still make sense without you in the room. Which sounds responsible. It also means the slide is competing with you for the audience's attention instead of supporting what you're saying.
A slide built as a tool does less on its own. It might be a single number, a shape, or a two-line contrast — something that only completes its meaning once you say the sentence next to it. That's a harder thing to build than a comprehensive one, because it forces a decision about what actually matters instead of deferring that decision to "let's include it and see." I wouldn't recommend this shift for every slide in a deck — a reference appendix genuinely should be complete — but for the slides you're actually going to stand next to and talk through, it changes how a room responds almost immediately.
What Actually Changes When You Design for the Listener Instead of the Grader
The practical shift isn't stylistic, it's sequencing. Instead of writing everything you know and then trimming, start from the one sentence you want someone to repeat to a colleague afterward, and build backward from there. Anything that doesn't serve that sentence moves to a backup slide, not the main flow — the information isn't wasted, it's just not competing for attention it hasn't earned yet.
Visual structure helps here more than most people expect from something that sounds cosmetic. A relationship or process that's currently described in three paragraphs of bullet text usually collapses into a single diagram once you're forced to decide what actually connects to what — which is exactly the decision straight-A instincts tend to avoid making. If you're rebuilding a dense slide this way, a relationship diagram template gives you the connectors and hierarchy already handled, so the only decision left is which relationship actually matters. For anything data-heavy, starting from a chart template built for one message per slide forces the same discipline — you can't dump a full dataset into a layout built around a single takeaway. And if the whole deck needs restructuring around fewer, clearer slides rather than more complete ones, it's worth seeing what a structured design template actually removes from your workload versus what it forces you to decide.
None of this means know less, or prepare less — the depth is still what makes the answer to a hard question good. It just means the depth belongs in your head and your backup slides, not on the screen the room is looking at while you're the one talking. The next time a deck feels safe because it's complete, that might be the exact signal to cut it in half.
